Six adventurous strangers travel to a mysterious building to experience the escape room — a game where players compete to solve a series of puzzles to win $10,000. What starts out as seemingly innocent fun soon turns into a living nightmare as the four men and two women discover each room is an elaborate trap that’s part of a sadistic game of life or death. – Sony Pictures Entertainment

Escape Room was directed by Adam Robitel and written by Bragi F. Schut and Maria Melnik. From the minute I saw the trailer for this movie I was interested. It looked like a cross between Saw and Final Destination—one those is my favorite horror franchises (hint it’s not Saw.) The trailer had me all in but then I saw it was coming out in January and that worried me.

With lots of trepidation I entered the theater but left pleasantly surprised.  Escape Room was a fun little horror movie.  That idea wasn’t entirely fresh but the set pieces and the chemistry of the cast distracted from that—coupling those with the mystery itself which intrigued me—I was left on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next.

Some of the cast was really likeable and others were not, which was clearly intentional. I liked watching something of them get hurt, really just one and the others I cared about. It was fun watching them all work together to solve each room’s riddles. Tyler Labine is always likeable and his role in this movie was no different. Nik Dodani along with Labine provided Escape Room’s needed comic relief. It was cool seeing Deborah Ann Woll in something other than Daredevil. Jay Ellis played a great dick.
Taylor Russell and Logan Miller stole the movie. I’ve seen Miller in a few things and he continues to impress me. Russell I’ve never seen in anything before but she was fantastic.

The only place this movie really falters is where it forces a set up for a sequel in at the end. I was into the movie, I probably would’ve gone and seen a sequel but they went ahead and shoved a bunch of future plots done my gullet and that left a bad taste in mouth. Take that shit out and this was a pretty solid horror flick—I had to knock it down a bit in my score for the shoehorning.

I give Escape Room a 7 out of 10, would watch again.

“The craftsmen ship in here is just terrifying.”
