Just like John Wick coming out of retirement I too have also decided to come out of retirement. Will Watches Movies is back. I chose to, John Wick did not. Anyways you guys don’t care about me so let’s get into the review.
John Wick was a bit of a surprise movie to most, it basically just flew under the radar. I hadn’t even heard of the movie until it was on blu-ray and in a $10 bin at Target but the cover looked cool and I like Keanu Reeves, so buying John Wick seemed like a no brainer. I was pleasantly surprised when I watched it, awesome action and choreography. John Wick is probably one of my favorite action movies and John Wick 2 is an excellent follow-up.
John Wick 2 reunites Keanu Reeves, Chad Stahelski the director and Derek Kolstad the writer. Chad Stahelski was previously a stunt director and worked with Keanu on The Matrix films. I believe the original was Stahelski directorial debut anyways it is evident that being a stunt director prepared him for directing because John Wick and John Wick 2 are both beautifully shot and the action is some of the best choreographed action I’ve seen in a movie.I’d say if DC hadn’t just gotten Matt Reeves to direct The Batman they should have this guy do it. Apparently the character of John Wick is loosely based on Kolstad’s grandfather, so I wouldn’t
fuck with that guy. Kolstad wrote another good movie. I think both are written well, great character and great story. Keanu Reeves is amazing and he just seems like such a down to earth and humble dude. He does like 90% of his stunts in both movies and you can certainly tell. Because of that dedication it makes the character of John Wick all the more believable and bad ass. John Wick 2 brought in a few new characters too. The two that stand out the most are Common’s Cassain (not the guy from Rogue One) and Ruby Rose’s Ares. Ares was deaf so I guess it was cool that she was an assassin that new sign language but other than that I thought she was kind of bland. Common on the other hand, I thought he was awesome. The dude just keeps popping up in movies and kills it. He was an assassin too. John and him had some great fight scenes. In one scene they are fighting and they fall down the longest flight of stairs I’ve seen and I just couldn’t stop laughing. Laurence Fishburne was in the movie too, I almost forgot. Him and Keanu had a little Matrix reunion, those two have some good chemistry.
I really only have one complaint about John Wick 2 and it isn’t even really a complaint. This one has a slower start than the first one. The slow start was good though. The plot was set up well and we got a lot more of the assassin mythos than the first one but I still want more. Not only do we see the Continental from the first one but we see a version in of it in Rome. It is there in Rome where we see how an assassin gets their clothes, their guns and their intel. Obviously everything has humorous code names just like the “dinner reservations” from the first one. I changed my mind no complaints. I liked the world building and I still want more. Apparently we are going to get more. This one ended rather open ended so there is definitely place for a sequel and there have been talks for a prequel series. I for one would like a sequel and a prequel series.
As a previously mentioned the choreography for this movie is phenomenal, there are some really beautiful and well put together action set pieces. Even if the plot for this movie sucked, the action could totally make up for it. John Wick once killed three men in a bar with a
fucking pencil. That is only something heard about, we never actually see what he can do with a pencil, until now.
I really liked John Wick and John Wick 2. If you liked the first one you most certainly need to see this one. Sequels are almost never as good as the originals, this one might break the trend. This movie is an action lovers wet dream, so check it out. Also I just gotta say Keanu Reeves looks real good in a suit, like real good.
I give John Wick: Chapter 2 an 8.88 out of 10, would watch again and I will be buying the blu-ray.
Be seeing you.
